Serve

After a few months of e-mail correspondence I finally get to meet Fr. Gerry O'Connor, a Redemptorist priest who works and lives in Ireland. Alongside his job as a priest he also runs a Charity called Serve, 'solidarity in action.' They work in developing countries, offering volunteer programs to either to house build or to educate.

Fr. Gerry, or he likes to be called Gerry, currently is helping the Redemptorists in Haiti. If you read my previous blog about the Redemptorist under 'Home Away from Home', you can understand why they need help.

So I had a day away from Architecture for Humanity and tagged alongside Gerry & Ben to visit a few schools and a boys orphanage to see what the Redemptorist and Serve can do. Obviously, I did offer help with architectural stuff.

The first site was the NCUP school. This primary and secondary school is said to be supported by the St Clements school in Bonn Germany. They are hoping to link the schools together.

After viewing the possible site for the new St Gerard school, we eventually made out way to the neighboring town called Leogane. This was where the epicenter of the earthquake was.

In Leogane, we visited two different sites, a boys orphanage that needed help completing the orphanage.

This is the proposed dining room for the boys.

It was tough meeting the boys, as most of their parents were killed in the Jan 2010 earthquake. A few of them still have fathers, but unfortunately they can no longer look after them.

The last stop was Ecole Notre O des Anges, a school that was seriously damaged during the earthquake.

The entire school lost its roof completely.
